What is Organic?

Why are people attracted towards organic food? Is it simply a new trend? Or is it a new concept of food? Why are the doctors recommending it? Will it stop the aging or make your hair grow again? There are a lot of questions around the word “Organic”. So what is it exactly?

Let’s find out

So what does 'Organic' actually means?

Okay, let’s start. What exactly does the term ‘organic’ mean? The murmur of this word has become loud enough to grab your attention isn’t it? The Department for Agriculture and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) gives a clarity on the Organic term.

According to them, “Organic food is the product of a farming system which prevents the usage of man-made fertilizers, pesticides; growth regulators and livestock feed additives. Irradiation and the use of genetically modified organisms or products produced from or by GMOs are generally prohibited by organic legislation.”

Basically, what they mean to say is that, it’s all 100% Natural.

Organic foods are crops that are produced without using synthetic pesticides, fertilizers, or other genetically modified components. They also include animal products such as cheese, milk, meat, or honey that were also produced free of growth hormones, antibiotics.

Now the question arrives, Why Organic?

So its 100% natural, but how does it affect you? Organic foods get their nutrients straight from the healthy and nutrient rich natural organic soil. The soil is enriched with the nutrients by adding manure to it which is prepared from natural waste such as cow-dung, left over fruits, veggies, crops, leaves, etc. If the soil is healthy then there is no requirement for the fertilizers. Non-organic crops obtain their nutrients from synthetic fertilizers prepared from fossil fuels. Years of not recharging the soil with organic matter force farmers to add synthetic fertilizers. This leads to nutrient scarce crops ripened from the same thing that fuels our cars.

Consuming organic is the nicest way to avoid GMO foods, ingredients, and contamination. Science has proven the harmful effects of consuming GMO crops on humans and the environment. The use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) is prohibited in organic products. To meet the International organic regulations, farmers and processors must show they aren’t using GMOs, and that they are protecting their products from contact with prohibited substances.

Some researchers have reported that organic produce has elevated levels of vitamin C, specific minerals, and antioxidants — thought to protect the body against aging, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. No artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives are allowed in organic food. Cleaner food means cleaner diets which lead to a cleaner bill of health.

When selecting organic products, most consumers start with organic food items such as fresh harvest and milk. However, there is a wide diversity of other organic products available, including organic apparel and beds/bedding, cleaning and household products, nutritional supplements, organic flowers, and even organic pet food.

Our choices when doing the laundry, selecting apparel, and buying personal care products all have an impact on the health of our planet. Choosing products made with organic ingredients is an easy way to ensure that this impact is a positive one.

Organic Food and Health Benefits

All organic non-food products are produced without the usage of toxic and continuous pesticides, as well as synthetic fertilizers. As a result, choosing an organic t-shirt, organic dog food, organic personal care or an organic nutritional supplement help prevent damage to valuable water resources, protect species diversity, and combat climate change.

Not only does organic production benefit decrease public health risks, but growing indication also shows that food ripened organically are rich in nutrients, such as Vitamin C, iron, magnesium, and phosphorus, with less exposure to nitrates and pesticide residues in organically grown fruits, vegetables, and grains when compared to conventionally grown crops.

In short, the best benefit of eating Organic food is that it makes you avoid the deadly in-organic food.

If you always wanted to help the environment, here's your chance!

Rather than depending on synthetic pesticides and fertilizers that can drain the soil of precious nutrients and increase environmental degradation, organic agriculture accumulates soil using practices such as composting, cover cropping, and crop rotation. Furthermore, organic farmers aspire to preserve and protect natural habitats with the understanding that a diverse biological terrain benefits to sustain both civilization and the planet.

Organic practices help keep our water supply clean from the run-off toxic and lasting chemicals. Also, by forbidding the method of petroleum-based fertilizers and soaking carbon dioxide from the air, organic agriculture helps to reduce our carbon footprint and combat climate alteration.

Organic agriculture methods promote biodiversity, the biological cycling of nutrients, and plant and animal health. Organic farmers do not use toxic synthetic pesticides, hormones to hasten animal growth and increase production, genetic modification or genetically modified feed, or artificial fertilizers. Instead, they use management practices that restore, maintain, and enhance soil health and ecosystem integrity.
